Visit Launceston - The official Launceston Tourist Information Centre website

History and Heritage

Launceston, once the ancient capital of Cornwall, has an unmissable 11th century castle dominating the skyline. The narrow streets, fine examples of early architecture, meander and wind within the town walls, past the one remaining medieval gateway, Southgate Arch. The renowned St Mary Magdalene Church has a magnificent carved exterior with a clock tower once used as a look out point.

Lawrence House Museum, located in a fine National Trust property near the castle grounds, is a small, child friendly museum providing an insight into fascinating local heritage. It does not take much to imagine the hustle, bustle and noise of the old market square as today's visitors follow a town trail discovering Launceston, a Cornish town steeped in history.
